Mazda2 Engined "Rotary" Prototype
Yokohama - CEO of Mazda Motor Corporation , Masamichi Kogai , has said there is no longer room for future rotary engine at Mazda . One of the conditions that can not be met is the marketing collateral of 100,000 units per year when it was decided to be mass produced . In addition , increasingly stringent emissions regulations , which currently is 5 euros . However , scientists do not give up . They have a solution to save from extinction rotary engine , the Mazda2 borrowing as " parent " .
Autonews reported last week , Mazda introduced the Rotary Engine Range Extender ( RE Range Extender ) for the Mazda2 . The new variants are still wearing the prototype of this new propulsion system of plug - in hybrid . It is a combination of 75 Kw electric motor for the front wheel drive , and a 0.33 -liter petrol rotary engine for backup energy supply in lithium ion batteries . It is said , this method has already been used in the Chevrolet Volt engine .
Which became the main idea is to solve one of the problems faced by the electric motor , which is run out of steam and no recharging stations nearby . Despite having a version of the electric vehicle ( EV ) for the Mazda2 can roam 200 miles rely on electric power , the Range Extender RE said to be able to walk twice the distance , using 10 liters of fuel .
RE Range Extender choose a lot of advantages , among which is able to consistently save fuel when running in optimum condition , not noisy and minimal vibration , more fuel options , and has a relatively small size and can be immersed in some of the models body .
Although it is not clear if the unit is mass produced , Kogai still hold on to sentimental reasons . " We are the first and the only manufacturer who commercialize the rotary engine . In view of that , we have a responsibility , " said Kogai .
